Anthony Mann é um dos grandes artesãos do Cinema Clássico de Hollywood (Jacques Tourneur, Samuel Fuller, Joseph H. Lewis...). Começou como assistente nos anos 40, e de seguida incumbiram-no de realizar, qual artesão, dezenas de filmes negros no final dessa década (séries B de baixíssimo orçamento). Foi com alguns desses filmes ("Raw Deal" e "T-Men") e com alguns westerns da década seguinte ("Bend of the River", "The Naked Spur", "Winchester 73", "The Man from Laramie" e claro, "Man of The West"), que mereceu menção junto a mestres absolutos como Ford e Hawks. A repetição dos temas, a coesão artística e estética que parte da sua obra atinge é inegável.

As a result, Man of the West veers much closer to the grimness of Greek tragedy, its mountains and rock formations often suggesting the silent witness of an ancient amphitheater. (The connection isn’t accidental; another of Mann’s late interviews is peppered with references to Oedipus Rex and Antigone, and one of his best early westerns is entitled The Furies.)"

"Man of the West" fez pouco dinheiro em 1958, mas é obra de um visionário, e o seu último grande western. Godard, a propósito deste filme comparou-o a Griffith (re-invenção do western, nada é novo mas tudo é novo), vários críticos evocaram tragédias gregas, Shakespeare. "Man of The West" merece tudo isso. Tudo isso e muito mais. É o mais perfeito dos westerns (como outros do realizador; "Stars in My Crown" - Tourneur; todos os westerns de Hawks; vários de John Ford; "Run of The Arrow" - Fuller; Há mais - Ray, Peckinpah, H. Lewis....), uma obra-prima absoluta.
As paisagens em "Man of The West" modelam os personagens, pressagiam, anunciam e ajudam à violência, e isto é verdade para este filme como o é para "Bend of The River" e "Naked Spur". A violência neste filme trespassa o ecrã, rasga-o completamente. Violência traz violência, traz violência. O que tomámos por certo pode, a qualquer momento, desvanecer.
A cidade fantasma, as "explosões" de violência, o conflito interior do personagem de Cooper e como Mann contorna as fragilidades do argumento e de algumas das interpretações, com a mais meticulosa das mise en scènes. Perfeito. Clássico. Essencial...
